Training Developments Scotland’s 26-week Gas Foundation Course is designed for complete new entrants to the gas industry. Our course covers all the stages required in order to get to the point of registering with Gas Safe. What makes us truly unique, it that our course does not only teach you to be Gas Safe, it also teaches you all the vital skills to become a skilled engineer. The additions we have made to the Gas Foundation Course curriculum makes ours the most comprehensive gas training course in the whole of the UK.

These additions to our course have been recognised by many of Scotland’s leading gas engineering companies and because of this, they regularly use our course as a recruitment pipeline for any positions that arise.

Our partnerships with these companies also allow us to guarantee every candidate with a work placement so that they can complete their portfolio of gas work, a mandatory requirement for anyone new to the industry.

Core Gas Safety - 10 Weeks

• Gas safety legislation

• Pipework and pipe-sizing

• Combustion

• Flues and chimneys

• Ventilation

• Gas safety controls

• Practical and theory combining gas safety and basic testing

• Tightness testing and purging

• Unsafe situations

• Appliance servicing

• Component recognition and testing

• Installation of gas appliances

• Stripping and rebuilding of gas appliances and components

Stage 2 - Core Skills - 8 Weeks

• Door step protocol / customer journey

• Safe systems of work

• Fault finding, diagnosis and repair on domestic appliances

• Electrical multi-meter use plus wiring of ‘S’ & ‘Y’ plan central heating systems along with combi controls

• Central Heating System Design

• Intelligent heating controls

• Sequence of operation of gas appliances

• Essential Electrics

• System and heat only boilers explained

• Portfolio sessions throughout


Stage 3 - Work Placement - 4 Weeks

One of the most important parts of the gas training process is building up a portfolio of evidence. You cannot sit your final ACS assessments without a portfolio of evidence and this can only be gathered by working alongside a Gas Safe Registered engineer. We 100% guarantee you with an on-site placement in order to complete your portfolio


Stage 4 - Basic Plumbing - 2 Weeks

• Installation of baths, showers & taps

• Drainage repair & installation

• Open vent systems / tank fed installations

• Water treatment

• Unvented hot water


Stage 5 - Final Assessments - 2 Weeks

The final stage of the gas training process is to sit your ACS (Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme) assessments. Once you have passed these assessments you will be eligible to join the Gas Safe Register.

What We Have Added to the Logic Gas Foundation Course

MET1 - Install, exchange, remove & commission gas meters up to 6 cubic metres capacity.

Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems - Installation, servicing and maintenance of unvented hot water systems from 15 to 500 litres.

System Design & Fault Finding - Our own system design and fault finding course aimed at giving you a better understanding of how central heating systems and boilers work

Essential Electrics - All the essential electrical knowledge required for fault finding.

What is unique about Training Developments Scotland?

Who is your course Accredited by?

Our course is accredited by Logic Certification.

Do you offer any distance learning courses?

No. We do not believe that you can be trained sufficiently on a self learning or self study course within the heating industry.

Am I eligible to join the Gas Safe Register after successfully completing the course?

After you have passed your assessments you will be eligible to join the Gas Safe Register and hold the mandatory qualifications to work within the domestic gas industry.

Will I gain any hands on experience during this course?

Of course. Our Gas Foundation Course is one of the longest courses available for new entrants. This gives us plenty of time to spend in our practical workshop concentrating on skills that are going to make you employable. You will also spend 4 weeks with a Gas Safe Registered company where you will build up a portfolio of work which is a mandatory requirement before you can be assessed.

Am I guaranteed a job?

Training Developments Scotland cannot guarantee you a job. We will not make false promises. Although we cannot guarantee you a job after the completion of our gas foundation course you will have an extremely high chance of employment as the gas industry is crying out for competent engineers.

Will you help me find a job?

Yes. Once you have passed your assessments we will help you build a CV and direct you towards potential employers. We also have a job notification board kept at the reception area that we update every week with the latest gas engineering jobs.

What is the industry standard salary for a gas engineer?

The industry standard salary for a gas engineer ranges between £27,000-£32,000, however, it can be significantly higher should you decide to work as a self-employed gas engineer.


Once qualified you will be able to;

• Install, service, repair and commission gas central heating boilers, water heaters, fires, cookers and meters

• Provide out of hours emergency call-outs at premium rates

• Complete Landlord Gas Safety Certificates (CP12)

• Provide maintenance contracts

• Apply to become a sub-contractor to British Gas or many other companies

• Work with insurance companies and housing associations and much more.
